Many individuals may not realize what a Varsity jacket is or how a person goes about earning one. Basically, it is there to represent what achievements that the student has had at their particular learning establishment. The achievements can include playing football, being in the marching band or getting good graded. Some people may know this as a Letterman jacket as it has also been known as.

Originally these were sweaters with letters on them that were earned from their participation at school. Most modern Varsity jackets have the school that it was earned from, the name of the student, the year of graduation, activities that they participated in and then the letter itself. This is usually the initial of the school that they are attending. These jackets can be given out at the high school and college levels of education. The jacket, lettering and letter are in the school’s colors.

Earning a letter for your Varsity jacket entails earning a certain grade point average, participating in a school sport or other activity. Each activity requires a certain level of commitment to be able to write that activity on the back of the jacket and add the letter that you earn. For instance, earning an academic letter requires the student to have a certain grade point average for a certain amount of years. Earning a letter for being on a sport’s team requires you to have participated for a certain amount of time at the varsity level, meaning usually as a junior or senior. At most institutions, the letter is not given out until graduation day when the student earns their diploma or degree. Some institutions will also provide the jacket that the letter goes on, as well, but in most cases the student or their parents have to purchase it.

A Varsity jacket is a great way for students to show their pride in their Alma mater and what particular activities that they participated in while attending. They are able to show off what school they attend, what they enjoy doing and when they will graduate. This jacket will be a treasured keepsake that helps them to remember their achievements even after they no longer wear it.
